Sakec Marathon, Chembur

17/03/2024

Endurance is one of the most important life skills. One can win in life only by enduring. One such sport of endurance is a marathon. A marathon stands as a symbolic test of human fortitude and determination.  Behind this glamor of the race, stands a physiotherapist among a cadre of professionals who makes sure that the functioning of the athlete is seamless alongwith their safety. Here, we will dwell into the role and experience of five physiotherapists who volunteered at the SAKEC Marathon on 17/03/2024.

The day of the event started with an immense number of athletes entering the venue with high energy and motivation. To increase their morale further, the physiotherapeutic team engaged themselves with the

conditioning of the athletes. This included giving them proper guidance regarding pre race stretching, warmup exercises and invaluable insights regarding injury prevention and protection. The meticulosity of the detailed approach for athlete counseling made sure that all the athletes start their races in optimum physical condition.

Just before the commencement of the race, all the participants got engaged in pilates; making sure that their bodies got warmed up before the race.

The race started with the flag off sharp at 6am. The participants started with the marathon accompanied with the drums; the physios making themselves ready with all the things that could go wrong in a marathon. With the immense knowledge about the human physique and utmost care for the athletes, they started treating whoever approached them for need. Athletes ranging from all ages approached the physios for help and after making quick assessments, they continued  to play a pivotal role in the runners’ journey through the realm of recovery; prescribing post race tailored stretches, devising personalized rehabilitation plans to facilitate expedited recovery, mitigating the risk of long-term injuries, and fostering a conducive environment for runners to pursue their athletic aspirations.

Beyond their immediate responsibilities, physiotherapists engage in educational advocacy, disseminating valuable insights on injury prevention, proper training methodologies, and the significance of seeking professional guidance. Their presence at marathon events serves as a beacon of awareness, underscoring the indispensable role of physiotherapy in fostering holistic well-being within the athletic community.

As the curtains descend on yet another triumphant marathon event, it is imperative to acknowledge the indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication of the physiotherapists who through their selfless contributions and expertise serve as the bedrock upon which the marathon experience is built, ensuring the safety, comfort, and success of every participant.

To be one of the physiotherapists in this marathon was both a learning and a teaching experience. I may be speaking on behalf of everyone from my team and they would support me when I’d say that it was one of the most wonderful experiences working with SWITCH India ever.
